Every Spotify Ad Blocker Compared

9 min read· Last checked: 7 October 2026
Short answer

Premium is the only official ad removal. Among community options, BlockTheSpot's official repository is archived, SpotX's repository was last pushed in May 2023, Spicetify is active but customises rather than blocks ads, and the Mac community repository is archived. Compare each on repository status, platform, verifiability, and account risk, and check the live status before installing anything.

Current status: The official BlockTheSpot repository is archived (read-only) as of February 2026. For what this means for your install, see the live status page.

How to read this comparison

Most published comparisons of Spotify ad blockers mix verified facts with claims that cannot be checked, and they rarely show their sources. This page takes a different approach. Each row is limited to what we could confirm, using public GitHub data checked on 7 October 2026 and the official sources named for each tool. Where we could not confirm a fact, the table says so. We have not tested each tool on a machine, so nothing here is a test result.

Row by row: what each option is for

Spotify Premium is the official route. It removes ads on every platform through a subscription, with no client modification and no question about how a tool interacts with updates. The cost is the subscription itself.

Spotify Free, as shipped, has no ads removed and no modification. It is the lowest-risk option for the app, and the trade-off is the ads.

BlockTheSpot is the community patch this site covers. It removes audio and banner ads and some telemetry on the Windows desktop app, and its config.ini is readable. Its official repository is archived, so fixes for newer Spotify builds are not published there. Our status page covers the current facts.

SpotX is a separate project. The original BlockTheSpot repository describes it as a successor. The repository we checked is not archived, but its last code push was in May 2023 and it listed no releases, so activity is unclear. We did not verify its mechanism in this guide. Our BlockTheSpot vs SpotX page explains what we could and could not confirm.

Spicetify is an active customisation tool. Its repository describes it as a command-line tool to customise the Spotify client, and it does not remove ads by itself. It is often used alongside an ad-blocking patch, as our BlockTheSpot vs Spicetify page explains.

BlockTheSpot-Mac is a community project for macOS, and it is archived. Its status makes it a source to inspect, not a product to rely on. Our Mac page covers the options.

What the table does not include

We have not included every tool on the internet. Some options mute audio during ads, some use browser or network approaches, and some are sold as converters or VPN bundles. We have not verified their status, safety, or platform support in this guide, so we do not rank them. Some of those products also come with conflicts of interest, since they may be sold alongside the tool they recommend.

A checklist for any tool, including ours

  1. Is the repository archived, active, or abandoned? Check the last code push and the releases list.
  2. Does it publish verifiable files? Look for published hashes or a clear build process.
  3. What platform does it target? Many tools are Windows-only, and some are for a single build.
  4. What does it ask you to trust? Be cautious of any tool that asks for your password or your payment details.
  5. What does it change on your computer? Prefer tools whose changes you can see and undo.
  6. Who is recommending it, and why? A ranking published by a seller has a conflict of interest.

Which to choose

Summary

Premium is the only official ad removal. BlockTheSpot is a verifiable but archived community patch for Windows. SpotX's activity is unclear in the repository we checked. Spicetify is active but customises rather than blocks. The Mac community project is archived. Check each tool's status yourself, and treat any ranking you cannot source with caution.

How to read a comparison table critically

A comparison table is only as good as its sources. Before you trust one, ask where each fact came from, when it was checked, and who benefits from the recommendation. A table that lists no dates, no sources, and a single "best" pick is not helping you decide. A table that names its checks and admits its gaps is more useful, even if it is less decisive.

Using this table to decide

Use the table as a starting list, then check the current repository status for any option you consider. The status changes faster than a guide can be rewritten, so the live check is always the final step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Spotify ad blocker?

The only officially supported way to remove Spotify ads is Premium. Among community tools, the best fit depends on your platform and on how much you value a verifiable source and an active project. Check repository status before choosing.

Which Spotify ad blockers are still maintained?

Based on our GitHub checks on 7 October 2026: Spicetify is active, BlockTheSpot's official repository is archived, and the SpotX repository we checked was last pushed in May 2023. We did not verify every other tool, so check each one yourself.

Can I trust a ranking of Spotify ad blockers?

Be cautious. Many rankings are published by sites that sell a converter, a VPN, or an extension, and they often do not show their sources. This page lists only facts we could check and says where we could not check.
